Choosing Your Signature Scent as an "It" Girl: A Guide to Finding Your Essence

There’s something undeniably captivating about the way certain women carry themselves. They walk into a room, and all eyes fall on them—not just because of their look, but the aura they exude. It’s that intangible confidence, that effortless grace, that turns heads. And let me tell you, a signature scent is the secret sauce every "it" girl swears by. It’s a reflection of your personality, your mood, and your very essence.

Finding the right fragrance can be like discovering a piece of your identity. Whether you're soft and romantic or bold and fearless, the scent you choose should leave an impression, turning every moment into a memorable experience. Here's how to find your scent and wear it with all the confidence of an "it" girl.

Understand Your pH

Has it ever happened to you were your friend smells so delicious with a specific perfume but that make perfume smells so differently on you? Well girl let me tell you, it’s your pH. I know, when I first found out that the reason why certain perfumes just didn’t do it for me was my pH, and although this may seem like a disappointment it’s NOT! This is a great opportunity to know exactly what works for you, so here it is…

a. Know your skin type

There are three kinds of skin types, there’s dry skin, oily skin, and combination skin. For my essence babes that have dryer skin, perfume scents are less intense and may fade a lot quicker. On the other hand, oily skin has quite literally the opposite affect. My girls with oily skin, scents may intensify and due to the increased oil retention those scents may last longer.

b. Understand Your Skin Type

Oily skin:

For my girls with oily, skin fragrances tend to last longer and intensify, and although this may be a win win it can also be a win-lose situation. Why I say this is due to the increased oil retention, using a stronger scent, can REALLY intensify the scent and it can become overwhelming. So using lighter scents is a great combination for this skin type.

Dry Skin:

Now, for my girls with dryer skin a lighter fragrance may not be the first thing you aim for. Dryer skin girlies may find that their scents fade out quicker and aren’t as strong. BUT DON’T FRET! Using a fragrance that is richer and long lasting, will be the chiefs kiss to your it girl scent.

Combination Skin:

I think combination skin is the best opportunity to try basically any fragrance. Like it says in the name, the combination of having a little bit of oily skin and a little bit of dry skin allows the fragrance to do its best job. Take advantage if you are a girly with this skin type, you can play around with many scents until you find the right one!

1. Know Your Notes

When it comes to perfume, understanding the fragrance notes is key. Perfumes are typically made up of top, middle, and base notes:

  • Top notes are the first impression and fade quickly (think citrus, fruity, or light floral).

  • Middle notes give the perfume its character once the top notes fade (often floral or spicy).

  • Base notes linger the longest, forming the foundation of the scent (woods, musk, vanilla).

The perfect "it" girl scent balances these notes to create something both intriguing and unforgettable. Play around with different notes—whether it's fresh florals, sensual vanillas, or mysterious spices—until you find one that speaks to you.

2. Match Your Scent to Your Vibe

Your signature scent should align with your personality and the energy you want to bring into the world. Ask yourself: Do you want to be remembered for your sweetness or your edge?

  • The Romantic Dreamer: If you live for romance, daydreams, and soft, effortless beauty, go for notes like jasmine, rose, or powdery musk. Think scents like Gucci Bloom or Marc Jacobs Daisy.

  • The Bold & Fearless: If you’re the type to turn heads and love standing out, spicy and woody scents with notes like oud, patchouli, and amber will be your best friend. Try scents like Tom Ford’s Black Orchid or YSL’s Black Opium.

  • The Minimalist Chic: Clean, fresh scents with hints of citrus or green notes give off that effortless cool-girl vibe. Think Jo Malone’s Lime Basil & Mandarin or Chanel’s Chance Eau Fraîche.

3. Wear It with Confidence

The magic of a signature scent isn’t just about how it smells—it’s about how you wear it. When you spritz on a fragrance that feels you, you’ll find yourself carrying a different kind of energy. It’s that subtle confidence that makes others wonder, what is it about her?

4. Change It Up for the Seasons

"It" girls know that a signature scent isn’t always just one fragrance. Different seasons can call for different moods. Opt for lighter, fresher scents in the spring and summer, while embracing deeper, richer fragrances in the fall and winter. It’s about evolving with the seasons, just like your fashion.

5. Let It Linger

Want to know the ultimate "it" girl secret? Layering. To make sure your scent lasts all day (or night), layer your perfume with matching body lotions or oils. This not only enhances the fragrance but also keeps it fresh for longer. And here’s a tip: apply perfume to your pulse points—wrists, behind the ears, the nape of your neck—where your body heat will naturally intensify the scent.

I like to use the Johnsons Baby Oil Aloe Vera Vitamin E as my base. This oil is not only budget friendly, it is super light weight and provides you skin with that extra vitamin E nourishment.

When I don’t have my Johnson Baby Oil, I use Vaseline. Vaseline is such an easy alternative and for the majority of us, we all own a little tub of vaseline. Rub the vaseline on your pulse points and then spray your perfume right over it. The vaseline will absorb the scent and cast a longer lasting scent.

6. Make It Personal

At the end of the day, your fragrance should feel like you. Don’t choose a scent just because it’s trendy or because your friends wear it. The beauty of being an "it" girl is about standing out, not blending in. Whether you’re drawn to a classic Chanel No. 5 or a modern niche fragrance, let your scent reflect your individuality.

Final Spritz

Choosing your scent as an "it" girl isn’t just about smelling good—it’s about creating a lasting impression and owning your essence. It’s the scent that people will associate with you, long after you’ve left the room. So, take your time, explore different fragrances, and when you find the one that makes you feel like the best version of yourself—well, darling, that’syour "it" girl moment.

Bye for now essence babes!
